BellSouth® Flexible DS1 Interface Service utilizes MSPP to integrate with OC12, OC48 and OC192 SMARTRing Services without the need for overlay nodes or rings.

 Benefits:

  • Realize unit-cost savings
  • Manage network bandwidth more efficiently
  • Terminate DS1s directly onto the node
  • Aggregate DS1s onto a SONET infrastructure
  • Share STS-1s at any node to deliver DS1 service on OC12, OC48, or OC192 SMARTRing
  • Connect at a customer location or CO at DS1, terminate at a customer or CO at DS3

BellSouth Self-healing Multi-nodal Alternate Route Topology Ring (SMARTRing®) Service is a dedicated, high-capacity network providing increased reliability and functionality via a self-healing digital ring topology between customer-designated locations and BellSouth Central Offices (COs). This service utilizes a dedicated network of SONET (Synchronous Optical Network) fiber-optic transmission equipment nodes configured in a ring architecture. All nodes are connected by fiber routed through local and interoffice facilities — allowing for the simultaneous transmission of DS3 services over both a primary and protected path between customer-designated locations and COs.

Designed to survive in the event of a single catastrophic network failure (such as a cable cut), the system monitors the quality of DS3 signals received over both the primary and alternate paths, and takes the best of the two signals. When a network failure blocks the signal received over one path, the service accepts the signal transmitted over the alternate path — thereby preserving network integrity.

More Flexibility
Until now, DS1 interfaces have only been available with OC3 and OC3+ bandwidth SMARTRings. But a new offering — BellSouth® Flexible DS1 Interface Service — utilizes the Multi-Service Provisioning Platform (MSPP) to provide 1.544 Mbps of bandwidth with SMARTRing OC12, OC48 and OC192 capacity. The service gives you the ability to connect at a customer location or BellSouth CO at a DS1 level and terminate at a customer or CO at a DS3 rate.

Flexible DS1 allows a single STS-1 to share bandwidth at any node around the OC12, OC48 or OC192 SMARTRing. Once a DS1 is provisioned onto an STS-1, the remaining capacity is used for DS1 service delivery.

No external multiplexing equipment or digital cross-connect terminations required.
With Flexible DS1, you can terminate DS1s directly onto the OC12, OC48 or OC192 multiplexer or node. You’ll save money by utilizing your node equipment more efficiently and managing your bandwidth more effectively — with fewer potential points of failure in your network.

Flexible DS1 also enables you to provision services onto higher-capacity services like OC48 without additional equipment or a Channelized DS3. And don’t worry— not requiring external DS3 channelization equipment does not prevent you from aggregating DS1s onto DS3. In fact, it gives you more options. In addition to terminating DS1s symmetrically, you can aggregate DS1s onto DS3s by utilizing Flexible DS1 in conjunction with BellSouth® Asymmetrical DS3 Service—without external multiplexing. This further increases efficiency of the OC12, OC48 or OC192 SMARTRing Services.

The flexibility of the service means there is a lot of bandwidth that could be used across many STS-1s. It also means that capacity can be exhausted very quickly if bandwidth is provisioned inefficiently. As a result, BellSouth limits the service’s total direct DS1 interfaces to 96, leaving the remaining bandwidth for higher-capacity interfaces such as DS3, OCN or 1,000 Mb service.

Need more than 96 DS1s? No problem. BellSouth still facilitates all traditional means of DS3 delivery, including 3/1 multiplexing via Central Office node connections or external OC3 overlay nodes for additional DS1s.

Ordering and Provisioning
Flexible DS1 Service is available wherever BellSouth deploys SMARTRing OC12, OC48 and OC192 Services. Transport Payment Plan (TPP) terms and conditions apply. When requesting Flexible DS1 service on your ASR request via BellSouth Common Access Front End (CAFÉ) or Electronic Access Ordering (EAO), please use the standard NC and NCI combinations and FLEXDS1 SPEC code (FLXDS1).
