Service Description
BellSouth Wavelength Service is the first optical solution enabled by the company’s investment in Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology – a high bandwidth data private line service. Protocol and bit-rate independent, the Wavelength Service provides high volume optical transport in a point-to-point configuration that supports a minimum and maximum bandwidth per optical signal – from 100 Mbps to 1.25 Gbps and from 52 Mbps and 2.5 Gbps and 10 Gbps LAN.
This Service will enable customers to move large volumes of data faster and accommodate multiple applications. Customers will be able to increase bandwidth for such applications as video conferencing, native Ethernet connectivity for LAN applications, packet over SONET and premise-based Internet telephony.
Benefits
BellSouth Wavelength Service gives customers the ability to choose bandwidth within the specified range without worrying about formatting. This provides rapid scalability as customers’ needs grow between locations in a point to point configuration shared and dedicated or a dedicated ring architecture. Greater network manageability comes from fewer physical connections and therefore, a reduced number of lines coming into customer’s buildings. BellSouth Wavelength Service also provides dark fiber characteristics (bandwidth, protocol and bit-rate independence) without the disadvantages (unmonitored, cost, scalability, survivability) of dark fiber.
Companies can capitalize on a more cost-effective, state-of-the-art optical technology to move larger volumes of data at greater speeds. The BellSouth Wavelength solution empowers companies to take greater control of networks by quickly turning-up or down business protocols as the need to access and employ large-scale applications. Companies can also leverage existing fiber-based networks and expand to ‘the last mile’ at a lower overall cost.
Additional customer benefits for Wavelength include carrier grade availability and scalability, smaller footprint and power requirements in POP space than traditional SONET equipment, faster provisioning times and quality of service.
Service Design
BellSouth Wavelength Services splits transmission paths on a single strand of fiber into multiple beams of light. Each light wave becomes an individual transmission path capable of carrying any type of data at speeds up to 1.25 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps and 10 Gbps. The new services will provide customers with a transparent optical transport that supports a minimum and maximum bandwidth for each digital optical signal: at the industry standard data speeds such as 100 Mbps, 200 Mbps, 270 Mbps, 1.0625 Mbps and 1.25 Gbps; and at SONET speeds such as 52 Mbps, 155 Mbps, 622 Mbps and 2.5 Gbps. BellSouth Wavelength Service also supports Ethernet, Storage applications and SONET services of OC-3, OC-12, OC-48, OC-192, and STM64.
Availability and Pricing
Pricing regulations are comparable to existing LightGate Service terms including Month-to-Month, Transport Payment Plan (TPP), minimum service period, additions, renewals, moves, disconnects and Transport Savings Plan capability. Customer orders will follow the 90-Day Service Inquiry Process currently effective for LightGate Services.
