BellSouth's SMARTRing and LightGate OC48 and OC192 services offer new enhancements.
Using the new OC48 and OC192 MSPP equipment, BellSouth can now provide 1,000 Mbps Transport, DS1, DS3, OC3, OC12 and OC48 services via SMARTRing and LightGate. BellSouth's new 1,000 Mbps Transport Service will meet the increased bandwidth requirements of today's data customers for Ethernet connectivity in e-commerce, data, video and Internet services. With the advent of this capability, BellSouth can now offer a multi-service platform to meet their transport needs.

Service Description
BellSouth® LightGate® service is a fiber-based transport service for interconnecting carriers' premises with one another and the BellSouth network. LightGate is a highly reliable, flexible digital transport service.
LightGate service switches to an alternate path in a second cable in the event of an error - ensuring that no single sheath outage can bring down the circuits. BellSouth is so confident in this architecture that it backs the reliability of the service with a Service Assurance Warranty in most cases.
LightGate also offers three synchronous capacity levels and four asynchronous levels, designed to meet every DS1 ands DS3 channel transport need. From a single DS3 up to 48 DS3s, the service provides hassle-free scalability for fast-growing networks.
Benefits
Every wireless network is unique, which is why BellSouth LightGate service is not a "one-size-fits-all" solution. Instead, LightGate is offered in multiple system capacities including four asynchronous and three synchronous modes. Each of these systems can support channel interfaces at DS3 or DS1 levels up to the total system capacity. This enables carriers to quickly and economically increase capacity to accommodate a growing subscriber base.
BellSouth LightGate also represents an investment in reliability. Whether it is designed for SAFT Level I or SAFT Level II, circuits are equipped with sheath diversity, to protect against individual cable failure. As an additional safety measure, LightGate has automatic protection switching capability, which switches service to alternate facilities in the event of primary facility failure. Linking BellSouth LightGate service to BellSouth® SMARTRing® service offers the added reliability of SONET ring architecture.
As point-to-point or hub configurations from the wireless switching station to traffic aggregation points throughout the network, DS3 channels offer the most reliable, high-volume, high-speed communications available. This high-bandwidth point-to-point service is ideal for interconnecting mobile switching centers, base station controllers, BellSouth wire centers (and connected antenna sites), and Interexchange Carrier points of presence.
Service Design
BellSouth® LightGate® Service comes in four asynchronous system capacity sizes: 1 DS3, 3 DS3s, 12 DS3s and 24 DS3s. The service also comes in four synchronous sizes: OC3, OC12, OC48 and OC192. Channel Interfaces offered are DS1, DS3, STS1 and OC3.
Rate elements consist of local channel mileage, local channel fixed rates, interoffice channel mileage, interoffice channel fixed rates, and channel interfaces at the customer premise and at the central office.
